"The aim is the integration of archaeological research, not only as an applied science and information carrier but also as a protection of our cultural heritage."

Το Μουσείο του σπηλαίου

The Cave of Lakes has preserved, within rich layers of the Neolithic, Early Helladic and Late Middle Helladic periods.

Significant anthropological and archaeological remains, such as utilitarian and fine pottery, obsidian and flint implements and other objects that constitute indications of the occupations, burial customs and the biocultural development of the populations during those prehistoric periods. For this reason, and within the framework of peripheral development and of the socialization of the cultural goods, it has been deemed necessary, in this case too, to create a permanent exhibition of the finds, which would, among other things, bring to the fore a site of outstanding archaeological merit, which is autonomous, and at the same time part of the general geographical system to which it belongs. The purpose of this exhibition is the presentation of elements discovered during the excavations in the cave, in relation to time, the geological and ecological environment, the social structure of the first agricultural communities and the organization of the economy.
The ultimate goal of this effort is the incorporation of archaeological research within the contemporary social framework, not only as an applied science and an information agent, but also as a means of protection of our cultural heritage. The purpose of this project is to give to the visitor information, regardless of his educational background; therefore the presentation is addressed to the simple interested person rather than the specialist scholar through educational devices, illustrations, explanatory texts, captions and maps, related to the individual fields of Geology, Palaeontology, Archaeology etc.
